Most people who try to learn ChatGPT for business end up with the same five lukewarm prompts they had three months ago. Not because ChatGPT is hard — because the path isn't structured. You need 14 days of focused reps. Here is the plan.
Thirty minutes a day. No prior AI experience. By day 14 you'll have at least three Custom GPTs, a personal prompt library, and a workflow that saves you measurable hours.
What "ChatGPT for business" actually means
It does not mean a $25/seat upgrade and the same usage patterns. It means using ChatGPT for the work that drives your business outcomes — writing, analysis, client communications, planning, decision support — with a system that survives you taking a vacation.
Days 1–4 — Prompts that work
- Day 1: Learn the role/context/task/format/constraints frame. Rewrite three of your typical prompts using it.
- Day 2: Pick a recurring task. Build a one-shot template prompt.
- Day 3: Compare GPT-5 vs o-series on a reasoning task. Note the difference.
- Day 4: Add "ask me three clarifying questions before answering" to a hard prompt.
Days 5–8 — Build your first Custom GPT
- Day 5: Define one role you play weekly (e.g., "Quarterly Business Review writer"). Sketch the brief.
- Day 6: Build a Custom GPT for that role. Add instructions, examples, and reference files.
- Day 7: Use it on a real task. Iterate the instructions.
- Day 8: Build a second Custom GPT for a different role.
Days 9–14 — Workflows and automation
- Day 9: Use Canvas to draft a real document end-to-end.
- Day 10: Set up a Task (scheduled prompt) — e.g., a Monday morning brief.
- Day 11: Try Operator / agent mode for a browsing task.
- Day 12: Connect ChatGPT to one tool via Zapier or a plugin.
- Day 13: Time-track a real day. Compare to a week ago.
- Day 14: Write your 1-page playbook. Save your top 10 prompts and 3 GPTs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Three things will slow you down. Skipping Custom GPTs (they are the leverage feature). Pasting confidential client data into the free tier — use ChatGPT Team or Enterprise. And refusing to compare with Claude or Gemini — picking your primary tool blindly costs months.
What success looks like on day 14
You should be able to: build a new Custom GPT for any new responsibility in under 20 minutes, choose between GPT-5 and o-series without thinking, ship a polished one-pager from a paragraph of input in 5 minutes, and explain to a colleague which task should not use ChatGPT at all.
